We are building equipment that can perform photoacoustic imaging using cheaper and more affordable equipment. One initiative uses LEDs rather than OPO lasers—this reduces the footprint and costs by 10- to 20-fold. This equipment is married to advanced algorithms to process the data and improve the signal-to-noise. We also are building colorimetric sensors that can detect defense threats or UV exposure and envision several future projects that use acoustic data for wearable sensing because of it offers better and deeper transmission through tissue than competing electrical or optical signal.
